Czech can be learned in general language and in various language skills at levels A1 to B1.1. The teaching of general language skills focuses on preparing students for study-related stays at universities. In terms of language skills, the focus is on writing, oral and written communication in everyday university and professional life.  

    • A1 - A2 Basic language use

      Without prior knowledge

      Course description

      Learning objectives
      Students will be able to demonstrate elementary language skills in a foreign language of their choice. Students can grasp slowly and clearly articulated concrete information on familiar everyday topics and understand simple and short texts syntactically, semantically, lexically, and morphologically while reading. When focusing on key words, they can deduce the meanings of unfamiliar concrete terms from the context. They can express themselves about their environment using simple phrases and respond appropriately to simple questions.

      Contents
      Contents of the language learning course in a foreign language of the student’s choice include: very simple texts and audio texts on everyday situations, especially in the university environment; elementary oral and written text production and interaction on this topic; development of relevant reading and listening strategies; development of simple grammatical structures and appropriate vocabulary; exercises in different forms and with different media.
      The languages available are Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Finnish, French, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Ukrainian.

      Teaching and learning methods
      4 SWS language courses and self-study.
      The courses must be selected from the A1 language course catalogue offered by TU Dresden, as specified; this catalogue will be announced at the beginning of each semester in the usual manner.

      Requirements for participation
      No previous knowledge is required.

      Usability
      The language learning course can be credited as a module in the study regulations (“Studienordnung”) of the respective degree program.
      It is a prerequisite for level A2.1 in the languages Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Finnish, Japanese, Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian; and for level A2 in the languages: French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish.

      Requirements for the award of credit points
      Language test(s) of 90 minutes.
      The credit points are acquired when the test(s) are passed.

      Credit points and grades
      Graded language certificate upon passing the language exam.
      If credited as a language learning course, 5 credit points are earned, unless the academic regulations (“Studienordnung”) stipulate otherwise. The module grade corresponds to the grade for the test(s).

      Frequency of the language learning course
      The language learning course is offered every semester.

      Workload
      The total workload is 150 hours, of which 60 hours are for classroom teaching and exam preparation, and 90 hours are for self-study, including exam preparation.

      Duration of the language learning course
      The language learning course lasts one semester.

    • Fremdsprache A2.1

      Basic knowledge

      Course description

      Learning objectives
      Students will possess basic communicative competence in a chosen foreign language. Students will be able to grasp slowly and clearly articulated, concrete information on everyday topics; understand simple and short texts relating to everyday and professional experiences in reading and writing, syntactically, semantically, lexically, and morphologically, provided the vocabulary is limited to frequently used and internationally understood words; follow largely short, simple conversations and very simple presentations and respond appropriately when the topic is familiar; and describe their surroundings orally and in writing using simple phrases and sentences.

      Contents of the language learning course in a foreign language of the student’s choice include: simple texts on everyday situations and specific topics, especially in the university environment; simple presentations and original documents – for example announcements, interviews, short audio and video sequences – on this topic; development of relevant reading and listening strategies; development of simple grammatical structures and appropriate vocabulary; exercises in different forms and with different media.
      The languages available are Arabic, Chinese, Czech, German as a foreign language, Finnish, Japanese, Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian.

      Course description

      Learning objectives
      Students will possess advanced elementary communicative language skills in a foreign language of their choice. Students can understand clearly articulated, concrete information on everyday topics; understand syntactically, semantically, lexically, and morphologically simple texts related to everyday and professional experiences, provided the vocabulary is limited to frequently used and internationally understood words; recognize different text types; communicate relatively easily in simple, routine situations, using connectives appropriately; describe their environment orally and in writing using simple phrases and sentences; and respond to a limited number of simple questions.

      Contents
      Contents of the language learning course in a foreign language of the student’s choice include: simple texts and audio texts on everyday situations, especially in the university environment; elementary oral and written text production and interaction on this topic; development of relevant reading and listening strategies; development of grammatical structures and an expanded vocabulary; exercises in different forms and with different media.
      The languages available are Arabic, German as a foreign language, Polish, Russian and Czech.

      Teaching and learning methods
      4 SWS language courses and self-study.
      The courses must be selected from the A2.2 course catalogue offered by the TU Dresden language training program, as specified; this catalogue will be announced at the beginning of each semester in the usual manner.

      Knowledge of the chosen language at level A2.1 is required.

      Course description

      Learning objectives
      Students will possess the ability to communicate independently and professionally in both written and oral forms in a chosen foreign language. Students will be able to understand straightforward factual information on common job-related topics; recognize the main information as well as individual pieces of information, provided they are clearly articulated; deliver a relatively fluent, straightforward, and coherent description of your own subject area; write straightforward, coherent texts on familiar topics from your own field. The students will develop intercultural competence.

      Contents
      The contents of the language learning course in a foreign language of the student’s choice include: Economic sectors and industries; professional and activity profiles; basics of business communication; simulation of workplace communication situations; development of written communication skills; application training; study systems and socio-cultural backgrounds in selected host countries; the languages available are Czech, German as a foreign language, Portuguese, and Russian.

      The courses must be selected from the B1.1 language course catalogue offered by TU Dresden, as specified; this catalogue will be announced at the beginning of each semester in the usual manner.

Students will be able to understand straightforward spoken and written factual information on common, everyday topics from the target culture; give a relatively fluent, straightforward but coherent description of culture-specific topics; write straightforward, coherent texts on familiar topics from the other culture.

      Contents
      The contents of the language learning course in a foreign language of the student’s choice include: Economy and Transport, Culture and Politics, Education and Science.
      The languages available are Czech, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian.
