Learning objectives
Students possess advanced productive and receptive skills in a chosen foreign language. Students possess sufficient language skills to complete an internship abroad or attend courses at a foreign university in the local language. They can understand the main points of audios on topics from everyday life, professional life, and the university environment, provided the language is standard or a familiar variety; largely understand non-fiction texts on abstract and concrete content related to their own interests and subject areas; express themselves in detail and coherently orally and in writing on past, present, and future topics within their own areas of interest; and draft official documents.
Contents
Contents of the language learning course in a foreign language of the student’s choice include: Texts and audios on everyday and professional situations, especially in the university environment; Oral text production and interaction on this topic; Writing longer texts on topics in your own university environment; Development of grammatical structures and an expanded vocabulary.
The languages available are Arabic, German as a foreign language, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish.
Teaching and learning methods
4 SWS language courses and self-study. The courses must be selected from the B1.2 language course catalogue offered by TU Dresden, as specified; this catalogue will be announced at the beginning of each semester in the usual manner.
Requirements for participation
Knowledge of the chosen language at level B1.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is required, as can be acquired in the Foreign Language B1.1 language learning course.
Usability
The language learning course can be credited as a module in the study regulations of the respective degree programme and is a prerequisite for level B2.1.
Requirements for the award of credit points
Language test(s) of 90 minutes, or 105 minutes if the study or module regulations (“Studienordung”) stipulate an oral exam is required. The credit points are acquired when the test(s) are passed.
Credit points and grades
Graded language certificate upon passing the language test(s). If credited as a language learning course, 5 credit points are earned, unless the academic regulations (“Studienordnung”) stipulate otherwise. The module grade corresponds to the grade for the test(s).
Frequency of language learning course
The language learning course is offered every semester.
Workload
The total workload is 150 hours, of which 60 hours are for classroom instruction and 90 hours are for self-study, including exam preparation and completion of the test(s).
Duration of the language learning course
The language learning course lasts one semester.
