Learning objectives
Students will be able to demonstrate elementary language skills in a foreign language of their choice. Students can grasp slowly and clearly articulated concrete information on familiar everyday topics and understand simple and short texts syntactically, semantically, lexically, and morphologically while reading. When focusing on key words, they can deduce the meanings of unfamiliar concrete terms from the context. They can express themselves about their environment using simple phrases and respond appropriately to simple questions.

Contents
Contents of the language learning course in a foreign language of the student’s choice include: very simple texts and audio texts on everyday situations, especially in the university environment; elementary oral and written text production and interaction on this topic; development of relevant reading and listening strategies; development of simple grammatical structures and appropriate vocabulary; exercises in different forms and with different media.
The languages available are Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Finnish, French, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Ukrainian.

Teaching and learning methods
4 SWS language courses and self-study.
The courses must be selected from the A1 language course catalogue offered by TU Dresden, as specified; this catalogue will be announced at the beginning of each semester in the usual manner.

Requirements for participation
No previous knowledge is required.

Usability
The language learning course can be credited as a module in the study regulations (“Studienordnung”) of the respective degree program.
It is a prerequisite for level A2.1 in the languages Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Finnish, Japanese, Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian; and for level A2 in the languages: French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish.

Requirements for the award of credit points
Language test(s) of 90 minutes.
The credit points are acquired when the test(s) are passed.

Credit points and grades
Graded language certificate upon passing the language exam.
If credited as a language learning course, 5 credit points are earned, unless the academic regulations (“Studienordnung”) stipulate otherwise. The module grade corresponds to the grade for the test(s).

Frequency of the language learning course
The language learning course is offered every semester.

Workload
The total workload is 150 hours, of which 60 hours are for classroom teaching and exam preparation, and 90 hours are for self-study, including exam preparation.

Duration of the language learning course
The language learning course lasts one semester.

Students will be able to grasp slowly and clearly articulated, concrete information on everyday topics; understand simple and short texts relating to everyday and professional experiences in reading and writing, syntactically, semantically, lexically, and morphologically, provided the vocabulary is limited to frequently used and internationally understood words; follow largely short, simple conversations and very simple presentations and respond appropriately when the topic is familiar; and describe their surroundings orally and in writing using simple phrases and sentences.

Contents of the language learning course in a foreign language of the student’s choice include: simple texts on everyday situations and specific topics, especially in the university environment; simple presentations and original documents – for example announcements, interviews, short audio and video sequences – on this topic; development of relevant reading and listening strategies; development of simple grammatical structures and appropriate vocabulary; exercises in different forms and with different media.
The languages available are Arabic, Chinese, Czech, German as a foreign language, Finnish, Japanese, Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian.
